I'm curious about how my E-Ink smartphone (Bigme Hibreak Pro) will affect my productivity. My current phone is a Pixel 7a.
I've done various experiments to reduce my phone usage over the past few years. I blocked the browser for a few months, my phone is usually B&W and has a minimalist launcher. I have YouTube recommendations blocked (as well as home page) for a few years now. My main time sinks are Reddit and Lesswrong, sometimes up to 2h in a day but usually can limit it to a few times a week. My daily usage is ~1.5-2.5h per week, excluding things like video calls or audio playback.
Resolution:
This market will resolve based on my assessment of the most significant impact after using the device for an extended period. I'll provide detailed reasoning for my selection when resolving the market. I will also provide detailed usage stats before and after, with some details anonymized if needed.
The main thing I want to prevent is the "reflex to pickup phone", while still not preventing me from doing normal phone things (whatsapp, slack, general lookup of info etc). If a specific app is a productivity booster (e.g. Claude, todo app), I will make a judgement on removing it from the time tracking.
My tentative predictions:
30%: It will help initially substantially for a few weeks, and then possibly the effect will recede a bit. And maybe after a longer time, I would go back to my old phone but have a bit better habits.
20-30% chance the effect will stick around and be pretty substantial
30%: technical issue or annoyance with usability, will return phone within a few days.
10% basically no effect
