Used a JSON jailbreak to get detailed instructions from gpt4 on making an RNA virus, then checked the instructions with a friend who's a biomolecular PhD and another who's an MSc

@DylanSlagh In no realistic world do I expect a gpt4 before preprocessing to be more capable than a gpt5 before preprocessing

@KabirKumar58cb So instead of the market being “Will an unrestricted GPT-5 be able to make a bioengineered virus?” the market instead should be changed to “Can an unrestricted GPT-4 create instructions for creating a bioengineered virus?”. The question as phrased implies both a future event (the potential capabilities of GPT-5) and also implies its ability to act on its own to create a virus. Creating instructions for creating a virus is not the same as creating a virus itself.

Regarding your comment, we don’t know how GPT-5 will be created. It’s possible that it won’t make sense for their to be a “unrestricted” version, perhaps the safety training will occur simultaneously with the initial training

Seconding the comment that you should clarify “make“. Most experts talk more about it in terms of “provide valuable info which cannot otherwise easily be obtained.“

“Making“ is terribly vague & doesn't capture the spirit of the question well (or at least not what most people would be interested in).

We'll probably never have access to a uncensored/unaligned version of GPT5 so.. basically except if someone working at OpenAI leak this very specific information to scare everyone, we'll never be able to know whether it's possible or not with the model.

What do you mean by "make"? Plan and execute on the manufacturing process for this virus, or just generate a genetic code for it? And in the latter case, does a lab need to test the validity of the generated code somehow?
